It is best to gain a variety of mentors to receive diverse information instead of just one person’s opinion. 3. If a mentoring relationship begins to get to intense, then it will be harder to make a break when necessary. If a mentoring relationship is more casual, then it makes beginnings and endings easier. 4. It takes time to develop a strong mentoring relationship, which may cause some isolation from other interactions.

One thing I like about my volunteer work was convincing people to work on an issue while letting them think it was their idea. My advisor at the time was supportive of my exploring other careers but was not very knowledgeable about careers outside of academia. I turned to the Career Center at Duke. I was clear that I did not want to work in laboratory research. The Career Center had never before counseled a science PhD candidate who did not want a career in academic or industry research. The Career Center Director decided to take on the challenge of helping me to find the job I wanted.

In that case, a simple ‘‘I’m sorry’’ can go a long way toward maintaining or restoring a healthy mentor–prote´ge´ relationship. As with every other aspect of the relationship with a mentor, one can use this as a learning opportunity. In some cases, the storm is weathered and the relationship can continue.
