I remember Willy: he looked like a big Swede. He had big bushy eyebrows and was a really good carver. In Skidegate, everyone who owned a trolling boat (that’s how everyone made their living in those days) had a boathouse, and that’s how I remember Willy and Ernie. They had a beautiful boathouse, and it was right where the bighouse is today—where Bill raised the totem pole in Skidegate. Their boathouse was right there, and it was fascinating to be amongst them and spend time with them and see their craft.

He created a range of works that, without lengthy explanatory labels, give a sense of unique artistic vision.
