In 1954, in a last-ditch effort to survive, a merger was negotiated with the Studebaker Company, in South Bend, Indiana. In 1956, all production was moved from Detroit to South Bend, effectively ending the life of Kahn’s sprawling facility. The company that had introduced such now-standard innovations as the automatic transmission, air conditioning, and power windows, was gone. For a time, portions of the plant were leased to small manufacturing and commercial concerns, but they only occupied a tiny fraction of the vast complex.

Although all of the stations were, by the standards of the day especially, clean, well lit, and tastefully decorated, the City Hall Station was something to marvel at. More highly decorated and uniquely designed than any other in the system, the City Hall Station was designed by the noted architectural firm of Heins and La Farge and overseen by Spanish-born architect Rafael Guastavino. Guastavino employed terra cotta tiles in hues of buff and cream and chocolate brown to construct a curving vaulted ceiling over the tracks and platform.
